As part of the UN system, UNIDO ITPO Germany mobilizes investments and technologies for sustainable industrial development. Situated at the UN campus in Bonn and in Germany’s capital city Berlin, ITPO Germany supports investors and companies by facilitating technology transfer from Germany to developing countries and economies in transition.
The German UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (UNIDO ITPO Germany) opened in 2017 at the UN campus in Bonn. It was founded based on an agreement between UNIDO and the German government. Its mandate is to foster mutually beneficial industrial cooperation between enterprises in Germany and in developing countries and economies in transition with a focus on SMEs. The mandate is aligned with UNIDO’s vision of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID). In 2023, ITPO Germany officially opened its office in Berlin in order to further enhance cooperation with Berlin-based business associations and political institutions.
It is ITPO Germany’s vision to make investments and sustainable technologies from Germany a catalyzer in achieving the sustainable development goals by 2030. ITPO Germany contributes to this vision through the mobilization of knowhow, expertise, technology and capital from Germany, working closely with the German private sector, whose environmental technologies are internationally recognized. It aims to unleash the potential of the German private sector, especially SMEs, to engage in activities in the developing world by mobilizing green technologies and investing in sustainable business sectors such as renewable energies and the circular economy, creating long-term jobs. ITPO Germany supports German and European technology providers and investors to find potential partners in developing countries. The office also connects companies and representatives from developing countries with providers of sustainable and innovative technologies.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) constitute the core of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all UN member states in 2015. The SGDs guide the global, regional, and national activities of UNIDO – and thus of course also the activities of ITPO Germany. Although the SDGs are interlinked, at the heart of ITPO Germany’s work is SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
Inclusive and sustainable industrialization creates employment, generates income and is thus key to economic development and sustained increases in living standards. ITPO Germany strongly supports the target of SDG 9 to promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and, by 2030, significantly raise the industry’s share of employment and gross domestic product, in line with national circumstances, and double its share in the least developed countries.
Quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure leads to inclusiveness as it connects people, reduces spatial disparities and empowers people worldwide to participate in trade and investment. SDG 9 aims to develop such infrastructure, including regional and transborder infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all.
Innovation is the foundation for not only economic but also environmental sustainability. Innovative technologies boost resource efficiency, low-carbon and energy-efficient production and circular economies. SDG 9 aims to increase the access of small-scale industrial and other enterprises, in particular in developing countries, to financial services, including affordable credit, and their integration into value chains and markets.
